Anthropic Launches A $5 Million AI Wellbeing Grant Program
Anthropic announced a $5 million grant program on August 25, 2026, funding independent research into how AI affects the wellbeing of the people who use it. Everything below comes from Anthropic's own announcement.
Transcript
Anthropic today launched a five million dollar grant program funding independent research into how AI affects user wellbeing.
Anthropic says grantees get funding, access to its models, and technical support. They work fully independently and publish their evaluations as open source projects any developer can use.
Anthropic says wellbeing is hard to evaluate. People also use AI for companionship and emotional support, and judging those replies needs the whole conversation, not one answer.
Anthropic wants evaluations that state what they measure, involve clinical experts, test both overcompliance and overrefusal, and reflect long conversations. Applications are due September twenty first.

- In brief, we're seeking evaluations that: State clearly what they are measuring (i.e., what counts as a pass or fail, and why it matters); Involve clinical and subject-matter experts in the design and validation; Test both precautions and harms (i.e., evaluate the risk of both overcompliance and overrefusal); Reflect how users actually use AI (often, this means constructing scenarios that represent multi-turn conversations, where risk escalates and context shifts over the course of a long conversation); Validate their graders against real subject-matter experts.(Anthropic's official announcement, Funding better evaluations of AI's impact on wellbeing, published August 25, 2026)
- Applications are due by September 21; applicants who are selected to submit full proposals will be notified by October 5.(Anthropic's official announcement, Funding better evaluations of AI's impact on wellbeing, published August 25, 2026)
