Watch and read the transcript (56s)Google Adds Voice Control to Gemini on macOS
Google has added a new voice capability to the Gemini app for macOS. Long-press the Fn key and you can speak into any window on your desktop, not just into a chatbot window. By default this gives you intelligent dictation: Gemini transcribes what you said into clean, polished text, automatically removing the "ums" and "ahs", catching mid-sentence corrections, and dropping the formatted text instantly at your cursor. There is a second level that is off by default. If you want Gemini to do more than transcribe, you can opt into Gemini reasoning through your settings, and once you enable it Gemini can understand the context on your screen to help you execute more complex tasks. Google's examples: highlight local files, images, or documents and say something like "Read these vet files and summarize my dog's medical history in an email to the kennel"; highlight text anywhere on screen and use your voice to rewrite it or tweak the tone, such as "Turn these notes into an executive summary with a TL;DR at the top"; or generate and edit images by voice, for example "Take this illustration and generate a dark-mode version of it". Worth being clear about what this is and is not. The Gemini app for macOS already existed, so what is new here is the voice layer inside it, and the screen-reading level is something you turn on yourself rather than something switched on for you. The announcement gives no benchmarks, no accuracy or latency numbers, no pricing, and it does not say whether audio is handled on device or in the cloud. The voice capability is rolling out globally to all users of the Gemini app for macOS in English, with more languages coming soon.

Papermaster and Cherny discuss the evolution from autocomplete to autonomous, multiagent workflows, and how engineers are becoming orchestrators of increasingly capable agents. They also talk about the value of curiosity, adaptability and the ability to generate strong ideas. The wider conversation covers leadership and culture changes, the importance of trust and verification, and the compute required to support long term agents. Worth being clear about what this is: it is a recorded podcast conversation between two executives, not a product launch, not a benchmark, and not an announcement of a new capability. AMD published no numbers, no pricing, and no release dates alongside it. If you want the actual arguments rather than a summary, the full episode is linked from the AMD newsroom post.

Google has published a guide to five ways AI Mode in Search can help you spend more time offline. Google says people are searching for questions like "how to digital detox" 110 percent more than they were at the beginning of the year, along with rising searches for adult tennis lessons, trail running, hiking and run club. The five uses Google highlights: ask AI Mode how to get started with something like tennis and whether beginner clinics or lessons are nearby, with Personal Intelligence connecting your Google apps so that if you have chosen to connect Google Calendar you get suggestions that fit your existing schedule; shop inside AI Mode for gear such as affordable hiking boots with good ankle support, add nearby or near me to see what is in stock in your area, and ask Google to call nearby stores to check product availability; use Canvas in AI Mode to build a guide of chess strategies and a game simulation you can practice against; find and book tickets for nearby concerts and sports by sharing your budget, ticket count and event, then finalizing at your preferred platform; and connect apps like Canva to Search so a prompt for a party flyer generates a custom design right in your Search results.

Meta and BlackRock have announced a venture to develop and own a data center campus in El Paso, Texas. Funds managed by BlackRock, together with Global Infrastructure Partners and HPS Investment Partners, will own an 80 percent interest in the venture, while Meta retains the remaining 20 percent. Both parties have committed to fund their pro rata share of approximately 14 billion dollars in total development costs for the buildings and the long-lived power, cooling and connectivity infrastructure at the campus. At financial close Meta contributes venture land and construction-in-progress assets valued at approximately 2.3 billion dollars, and BlackRock makes a cash contribution of approximately 4.9 billion dollars. The El Paso data center represents an investment of over 10 billion dollars from Meta. The campus, currently under construction, will have 1 gigawatt of compute capacity, and Meta will be the initial sole occupant upon completion. The venture expects to begin bringing capacity online in 2028. Meta says the project supports more than 4,000 construction jobs at peak and 300 operational jobs once complete, with over 2,300 workers already onsite. Mark Zuckerberg said building the infrastructure for superintelligence is key to making sure the benefits of this technology are distributed to everyone, and that the partnership allows Meta to move faster and at greater scale.

NVIDIA published a Jetson platform showcase kicking off a week-long series of getting-started examples, beginning with the Jetson Orin Nano Super. To be clear about what this is: it is not a new product launch. NVIDIA announced no new hardware, no new pricing and no new capability in this post, and the Jetson Orin Nano Super developer kit has been available since December 2024. What the post does is walk through what the platform can do today. AI investor Sarah Guo, founder of Conviction and co-host of the No Priors podcast, demonstrates the point by carrying the developer kit in a handbag. NVIDIA says Jetson Orin Nano Super brings desktop-class generative AI to a small developer kit with 67 trillion operations per second of AI performance, giving first-time builders a practical path to computer vision, AI agents and edge AI prototyping. The showcased projects include SidewalkPilot, a custom model that autonomously navigates left and right turns in a toy electric vehicle, and the Reachy Mini Jetson Assistant, a low-latency voice and vision assistant where everything runs locally with GPU acceleration and no cloud, no API keys and no internet required at runtime. NVIDIA also points to Jetson Device Skills and Jetson BSP Skills for deploying AI at the edge, a three-module livestream series, and the wider product range spanning Jetson Orin Nano Super, Jetson AGX Orin and Jetson AGX Thor.

Google has updated Managed Agents in the Gemini API. The antigravity preview agent now runs Gemini 3.6 Flash by default, with no code changes required, and developers can explicitly select a model by passing agent_config.model, including Gemini 3.5 Flash for general agentic workflows and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite for the lowest latency and cost in the 3.5 family. The headline developer control feature is environment hooks: adding a .agents/hooks.json file to your environment lets custom scripts run before or after every tool call the agent makes inside its sandbox, on pre_tool_execution or post_tool_execution events, with a matcher field that supports regular expressions. If a pre-tool script returns a deny decision, the tool call is skipped and the rejection reason is passed into the model's context, which makes it possible to block, lint or audit tool calls. Hooks also support http handlers that POST to an external endpoint. Google says managed agents are now available on free tier projects, so developers can experiment with an API key from a project without active billing. New budget controls let you pass max_total_tokens inside agent_config to cap input, output and thinking tokens; when the cap is reached the run safely pauses and returns status incomplete with environment state preserved, so it can be continued with previous_interaction_id and a fresh budget. Scheduled triggers bind an agent, environment, prompt and cron schedule into a persistent resource, and each run reuses the same sandbox so files persist across executions. An Environments API lets you list, inspect and delete sandbox sessions from code rather than waiting for the 7 day TTL.

Anthropic says Claude Mythos Preview has found mathematical flaws in cryptographic algorithms themselves, not just mistakes in how programmers implemented them. The first result is an improved key recovery attack on HAWK, a post-quantum digital signature scheme that is one of the remaining third-round candidates in NIST's call for additional signatures. HAWK had survived two rounds of expert human review over two years, but Claude found a previously unexploited symmetry in the underlying lattice, called a nontrivial automorphism, that effectively cuts the scheme's key strength in half. Anthropic says the work took about 60 hours. The expected cost of a full key recovery attack against the small HAWK-256 parameter was thought to be 2^64 and was demonstrated to be 2^38. The attack is still exponential, not a polynomial-time break, it is specific to HAWK, and it does not affect other NIST post-quantum candidates or lattice cryptography in general. The second result targets AES-128 reduced from ten rounds to seven, a weakened variant that researchers study to measure how much safety margin the full cipher has. Claude developed a fingerprinting algorithm it called a Mobius Bridge that removes a 256-way guessing step from the previous best meet-in-the-middle attack, making it between 200 and 800 times faster. That attack assumes roughly 2^105 chosen plaintexts, so it is completely impractical. To be clear on the impact: neither result affects production systems and Anthropic says no production software will have to change. HAWK is only a candidate scheme and is not deployed, and the AES result does not break the full ten-round cipher used in the real world. Anthropic says each result cost roughly 100,000 dollars in API cost, that Claude worked mostly autonomously, and that human verification was the slow part, with two researchers spending nearly a month gaining confidence the AES method was correct.

Microsoft has introduced Project Perception, an agentic security system it describes as designed for the realities of AI, turning signals into real-time protections and using AI to defend against AI. Microsoft argues that the approaches built for a world of human actors cannot keep pace with AI, agents and machine-speed attacks, and that security needs a new Cyber Stack that can continuously perceive risk, reason across context and act at machine speed while keeping humans in control. Project Perception coordinates three classes of specialized agents in a closed loop: red team agents identify potential paths to compromise, blue team agents investigate and determine what represents meaningful risk, and green team agents take corrective actions and strengthen defenses. It uses a multi-model architecture that combines frontier and specialized cyber models. The first scenario is software vulnerability management, with MAI-Cyber-1-Flash running inside MDASH, which Microsoft says delivers 96 percent on the CyberGym benchmark, 12 points above Mythos, with almost 50 percent cost savings versus the current MDASH configuration. Project Perception enters public preview on August 3.

You can start additional sessions for other questions or tasks without interrupting work already in progress, and Quick Chat opens a separate conversation from the app home screen. A browser canvas, created with the /create-canvas slash command, previews a running application alongside the conversation, and Canvas Dev Mode plus Pick and Polish let you select elements directly in the canvas and use them as context for the next request. Agent Merge then monitors a pull request as it moves through review and CI, and can address review feedback, help resolve CI failures, and handle merge conflicts before you choose to merge.
