Google and the UK government are starting an AI trial to stop planes from forming warming contrails.

Contrails are clouds formed when water vapor condenses around soot in jet exhaust. Google says they cause roughly one third of aviation's climate impact. Google is launching Operation Blue Skies.

Google says Shanwick airspace is about five percent of global contrail warming. Ten thousand flights cross it yearly, and the thirty month trial will slightly reroute a small share.

This is a trial, not a result. Imperial College London and Cambridge will independently verify the climate impact. Google UK contributes one point four million pounds in kind.
