OpenAI launched a new team studying whether AI could let governments hold power without public consent.

OpenAI published the first post on AI Futures, a blog from its new Strategic Futures team. The author, Dean Ball, says the views are his own.

The post argues power has always needed soldiers, police, and taxes from human work. Autonomous systems and data center revenue could remove that dependence on people.

The team calls this a concentration of power risk. It wants balance, not full decentralization, plus rules tying high stakes AI actions back to responsible humans.
