OpenAI commits $7M to the DOE Genesis Mission
OpenAI committed seven million dollars in direct support to the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission on July 22, 2026. The pledge includes four million dollars in Codex access for two thousand researchers at National Laboratories and universities, plus three million in API support for two large-scale scientific campaigns. Researchers who spend two point five million get up to ten million in API usage back, a four-to-one match. The two campaigns target high-temperature superconductors and an atlas mapping where AI can already drive scientific discovery.
Transcript
OpenAI just committed seven million dollars in compute to the Department of Energy Genesis Mission.
OpenAI is now backing the Genesis Mission with cash, Codex access, and API support for national labs.
The pledge: four million dollars in Codex for two thousand researchers, three million in API, and up to ten million matched.
Genesis was signed in November 2025. OpenAI already ran models on the Venado supercomputer at Los Alamos. Today they scale it up.
Seventeen national labs are inside the Genesis Mission.
Two campaigns lead the work: high temperature superconductors, and an atlas mapping where AI can already drive science.
