Today OpenAI previewed Private Safety Processing, a system to identify misuse patterns while keeping Zero Data Retention.

Zero Data Retention promises eligible API customers that OpenAI does not keep prompts or responses. Some recent frontier model deployments required customers to allow retention for safety monitoring.

Private Safety Processing identifies risk patterns across related interactions. Content stays on customer controlled infrastructure or is encrypted with customer keys. OpenAI receives only a narrow signal.

This is a preview tested with early customers, not a rollout. OpenAI plans wider availability and a technical white paper in September. Detailed methods are not public yet.
